Sun rising over misty fields and trees

“It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

Lamentations 3:22–23 · KJV

These words were written in a time of ruin and grief. Lamentations is a book of tears, yet in the middle of it shines one of the most hopeful confessions in the Bible: God's mercies do not run out; they are new every morning.

Every sunrise is a small sermon. Yesterday's failures do not cancel today's mercy, and yesterday's grace is not all the grace there is. God meets us again at the start of each day with compassion that has not grown tired of us.

Tomorrow, before you reach for your phone or your to-do list, pause for a moment. Thank God for one mercy you can see. Ask Him for the grace you will need. And step into the day remembering that His faithfulness is greater than any darkness of the night before.

Prayer

Faithful God, thank You that Your mercies are new this morning. Help me begin this day with hope in You. Amen.

For reflection

  • Which mercy of God can I name today?
  • How could I start my mornings with a moment of gratitude?
